Balut is a 14 to 21-day old fertilized duck egg depending on how developed one wants the duck embryo is. Balut is a common street food that has its origins in China. Pateros is the balut-capital of the Philippines. Balut is boiled and then eaten with salt or some spiced vinegar. The way to eat balut: crack the shell, peel it bit by bit, slurp the soup (cooked amniotic fluid of the chick) before eating the egg and embryo. It is a favorite street food in the Philippines as it is cheap and nutritious. Another version for the less squimish is Penoy. It is an unfertized duck egg that is boiled. Depending on one's preference, it is just egg boiled with the consistency from runny to hard boiled - definitely no duck embryo on this one. Clean room and bathroom however bed didnt feel as comfy. we were only there for 1 night so not a big deal. I thought early check in at 10:00 a bit pricey for 2000 pesos considering we had to check out at 2am for an early flight but other than that, it was a great stay.
