One of the main attractions of Coimbra’s central historic area, this fascinating preserved cathedral has a fortress design and Arabic touches.

Dating back as far as the 12th century, the majestic Velha Cathedral is a rare example of a preserved church of Romanesque design from the Reconquista era. Admire the fortress-like design of the cathedral’s façade, with its narrow arched windows and battlements marking the roof.

As you enter the cathedral via its towering central portal, notice the door’s traditional Arabic décor. The side portal is known as the Beautiful Door, in reference to its stunning Renaissance design by João de Ruão. Once inside the cathedral, visit the wonderful cloisters for their impressive pediments and columns.

Note how the Arabic influences of the Reconquista period can be seen in the patterns painted and carved onto the walls. This is clear from the bird and flower motifs that replace the typical depictions of biblical figures seen in most churches.

The remains of several bishops and important figures, such as the first Count of Coimbra Mozarab Sisnando Davides, are buried within the cathedral. Explore the intricate tombs and wander through the elegant courtyard.

Appreciate how well the church has been preserved over the centuries, following its inception in the mid-1100s. The structure survives from the Reconquista period, prior to the rise of the colonial empires of Portugal and Spain. The first king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques, financed the church.

The church is open to visitors Monday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon. There is a small fee to enter the cloisters. Most of the rest of the cathedral is free to visit.

The Velha Cathedral is in the heart of the historic center of Coimbra. It is just west of Coimbra University’s campus and a 10-minute walk east from the city’s principal railway station. Drive to the cathedral and leave your car in one of the spaces beside the front steps. Visit nearby sights, such as the Coimbra Town Hall, the Porta de Barbacã and the Santa Cruz Church.
