Get a closer look at the glorious stained-glass windows and read the plaque about the missionary history of one of La Paz’s most iconic buildings.

With its twin towers and neoclassical design, the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Cathedral serves as an impressive reminder of the Jesuit missions of the 1700s. The 19th-century church is La Paz’s principal cathedral and stands on the very spot where the initial mission was founded. Consider how its simple architecture and towers resemble the design of missionary churches across the Americas.

Admire the neoclassical façade, whose central pediment contains an elegant clock face and hoists a cross. On the exterior wall read the informative plaque that provides a brief history of the mission. Pass through the central portal to find yourself in the nave, which has a fairly somber and simple appearance.

Once inside, appreciate the colorful and airy effect of the stained-glass windows, which portray religious figures and scenes. Framing the windows are whitewashed walls decorated with orange features. Light a candle for a lost loved one and sit on a wooden pew to meditate.

Among the main attractions are the Baroque altarpieces that have been preserved from previous abandoned missions. Attend a service and and enjoy the excellent acoustics. The church is also used as a location for cultural events and concerts.

Step outside and walk across the patterned plaza in front of the cathedral. It is composed of large squares containing red crosses. Bushes and palm trees adorn this charming pedestrian area, which faces the adjacent Jardín Velasco.

The Nuestra Señora del Pilar Cathedral stands amid many of the city’s attractions in the Zona Comercial. Walk inland from the Malecón Kiosk for about 5 minutes to reach the church. If you decide to drive, leave your car in the cathedral’s parking lot. There is no charge to enter the church, which opens to visitors daily in the morning.

Learn more about the district by visiting other nearby highlights such as the Whale Museum, the Centro Cultural de la Paz and the Dove of Peace Monument.
