Capri’s principle harbor in the north of the island is a picturesque seaside resort with ancient ruins to explore.

The attractive Porto Marina Grande is the main entry point to Capri and has colorful houses, boutiques and cafés. Discover how the largest harbor on the island is much more than a transport hub as there are attractions and history on offer. Close by is a seaside resort, ancient Roman ruins and a 6th-century church.

Many visitors leave the ferry and go directly into Capri town. Allow time in your schedule to make the most of the Porto Marina Grande area.

There are plenty of opportunities to unwind. Sunbathe on the public beach and splash around in the surf. You can pay for a spot on the decks of one of the private bathing establishments.

From your table in an open-air café or restaurant see the luxury yachts docked in the harbor. Go for a walk and admire the scenery. Porto Marina Grande faces the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius can be seen on the horizon. One of the most attractive sights in this area are the brightly painted homes where some of the local fisherman live.

Porto Marina Grande is a good introduction to Capri’s history. Pay a visit to the church of San Costanzo, dedicated to the island’s patron saint. The oldest place of worship on Capri was built in the early part of the 6th century on the ruins of a Roman basilica.

Take the short shuttle boat ride to survey the ruins of Palazzo a Mare. This Roman seaside palace was a favorite of Emperor Augustus and Emperor Tiberius. There is also a small pebble beach here.

Once you have sampled some history, bathed in the sea and enjoyed a meal, make your way to the center of Capri town. The quickest way to get there from Porto Marina Grande is by a 3-minute cable car railway ride. The small train leaves every 15 minutes and during the high season departures are more frequent. If you need more information about the island or want to book a boat tour, Capri’s main tourist office and tour company ticket booths are situated in Porto Marina Grande.
