"The room was cleaner than we expected, and the staff was really friendly. Easy walk to the North end of stuff to do in Lone Pine. Parking is tight for larger vehicles. Blinds didn't completely shut which let light in at night. On the good side, the AC let the fan run all the time so we didn't get ..."

Gatehouse at Manzanar, most famous of the ten concentration camps, or "relocation centers" built to house Japanese-Americans and Japanese aliens during the Second World War. Nearly 120,000 people, two-thirds of them U.S. citizens, were removed from their homes, primarily on the west coast, to the camps inland. When I was a kid, riding up U.S. 395 to a camping or hiking trip in the Sierras, these gatehouses were the most visible parts of what remained of the camp. Manzanar has since become a National Historic Site, with an interpretive center housed in the camp's former auditorium and reconstructed barracks with exhibits documenting the lives of the internees.
