The monument consists of a single column which is inscribed: IN MEMORY OF THE UNFORTUNATE CHINESE VICTIMS DURING THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION IN MALACCA. When the Japanese invaded China, the Overseas Chinese everywhere formed anti-Japanese movements. Their resistance included remittance to China and taking up arms alongside the Allies in defence of their countries of residence. When Malacca fell into the hands of the Japanese thousands of Chinese lost their lives. The methods of execution were barbaric and inhuman. When the war ended the remains of their victims were collectively buried at the foot of Bukit China Hill. This monument was erected in memory of those unfortunate and heroic deaths in 1948.
