The Île de Ré Bridge is an inspiring piece of architecture connecting an island to La Rochelle on mainland France. Drive over the remarkable structure on your way to the exclusive island retreat. This is among the longest bridges in France, at about 1.8 miles (3 kilometers). It is the only driving route to the Île de Ré. Travel across the bridge to reach the sand dunes, forests and cycle paths of the island.

Take photos of the remarkable bridge from the La Rochelle coast. From here the structure and its countless arches appear infinite. The central part of the bridge rises high above the water to allow boats to pass beneath. It is made from concrete and steel. Marvel at the construction as you take a long walk or bike ride across the bridge.

Many affluent and famous French people travel over this bridge to reach their vacation homes on the island. See its charming villages, historic monuments and stunning countryside. Stay at one of the luxury hotels on the beach and enjoy the area’s sunny summers.

The Bouygues Society constructed the bridge to link the island to La Rochelle in 1988. On busy days, more than 16,000 motorists traverse the long passage. The island is also known as Ré la Blanche, indicating the brilliant white of its traditional homes. Visit this spot that is popular among French residents and international travelers.

Pay a toll to cross the bridge by road, which also includes the return voyage, as there is no pay station on the return side.

The Île de Ré Bridge is about 4 miles (6 kilometers) west of the center of La Rochelle in the La Pallice zone of the city. Take a taxi for the 15-minute journey or try one of the many bus routes that will take you to the bridge. The site is just west of the La Rochelle Airport.
