Herbert Hoover National Historic Site Tours

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site featuring a garden and a house
Stroll through this pleasant park with your family and visit the buildings that tell the story of a president’s upbringing.

The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is a scenic and informative complex devoted to the 31st president of the United States. Covering a picturesque area of 187 acres (76 hectares), the park sheds light on Herbert Hoover’s childhood as the son of a blacksmith. Piece together the fascinating life of this humanitarian and politician through the buildings and surroundings of his past.

Get your bearings in the modern visitor center and chat with the park rangers for a comprehensive understanding. Pick up activity booklets for your kids, so they can become Junior Rangers. The visitor center contains exhibits on Hoover’s childhood and his participation in the inauguration of this complex in his hometown.

Inspect the various works of art and watch the 12-minute movie, Adventure and Great Undertakings: Herbert Hoover’s Childhood in West Branch. You can also purchase books and gifts from the souvenir store within the visitor center.

Snap photos of the quaint exterior of the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Cottage, with the surrounding trees and meadows serving as an idyllic backdrop. The cottage has white walls, with a sloping roof of dark tiles and a red chimney. Enter the small, two-room building and imagine the former president’s infancy here.

Learn about the career of Hoover’s father via the blacksmith demonstration in the Blacksmith Shop. The family smithy specialized in horse shoes, plows and pumps. Make sure to see the Schoolhouse, the Friends Meetinghouse and the Presidential Library and Museum.

Hike with your family through these serene grounds and enjoy snacks and drinks at one of the picnic shelters.

Note that the park is open at all times, while its buildings open daily from morning until late afternoon. Park your car during the day on the loop road near the picnic shelters.

The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is just south of the main strip that runs through West Branch. Walk south from the town center for 5 minutes to get here. Visit nearby attractions, such as the West Branch Friends Church, the West Branch Wapsinonoc Creek and the Dog Park.
