  • I would not usually consider a garden a must-see experience, but I am really glad a local told us to visit Hamilton Gardens. The experience of wandering through a maze of hedges that open into perfectly cultivated gardens plucked complete from other countries and other eras was quite possibly the closest I will ever come to feeling like Alice in Wonderland come to life. You never know what magical sight waits around the next bend in the path.

  • A few kilometres downstream from Lake Taupo the river changes to some rapids for a short distance. When the rapids finish there is a drop which creates a waterfall. It all ends with this scene which is stunning. Only a 30 second walk from the car park to the river this shot was taken about a 5 minute walk further downstream on the main track at sunrise.

The rooms are not that modern so has that old look to it, and the paintings displayed makes the rooms date back to the 70's. However, the beds and linen etc, were nice and comfortable and clean.

Wonderful staff, quiet location, very convenient and parking right next to room - important for someone with mobility issues. Room was warm and clean, equipped with convenient kitchen appliances. Very reasonable rates. My second visit, and I would definitely recommend to others.

Extremely safe to check in and really helpful staff. Air con worked perfectly as well so I was able to keep warm throughout the night. Parking was easy and it was right around the corner from the stadium which was perfect for me

Was like a movie set for a deserted wild west movie, noone in sight, no other guests, vehicles, and rough and overgrown! We refused to stay here despite prepaying $234!

It had air-conditioning , but the draft under the door negated it. They never vacuumed the room during my 10 day stay. There were spider webs , dirt It had electricity and was at least a place to sleep. The bedroom downstairs had sheets that were stained . A bit disappointing

The room was very neglected & needs completely refurbishing. The springs could be felt through the sheets on the double bed mattress. The fridge freezer was noisy & in the bedroom area. All the paintwork was chipped & worn & the bathroom vanity stained & old. Flooring in the bathroom was marked, dirty & lifting in places. I've stayed in many places & thought this was very overpriced for the conditions. It looks like the room has never been redecorated since the motel was built.

Bed was very uncomfortable lumpy as. No reception at the motel had to drive 200 meters down the road to another motel to check in,no signage to say this.

Nothing explained that when I arrived I had to go to a completely different motel to pick the key up. The place looked abandoned. Nothing explained how it was also used for emergency housing. Felt unsafe. Was stressful and hard to get a hold of anyone on the phone to tell me I needed to go roughly 300m down the road to pick up my key.

Room was very dirty with mould on the ceiling in the lounge. Toaster oven wasnt very clean and the microwave was rusty. Shower had black on the floor. I booked a room with 2 single beds but the room I was given had 1.
