East Prom Trail Tours

East Prom Trail showing a bay or harbor, hiking or walking and a park
Former rail beds are often turned into trails. At this one you can walk, run, bike or swim for active relaxation within the city.

Portland’s Eastern Promenade Trail, also known as the East Prom Trail, includes many of the fine qualities offered by this coastal city in southern Maine. In addition to being a location for active pursuits, it’s also a popular meeting place. Traverse the 2.1 miles (3.4 kilometers) of the trail around the harbor to appreciate what makes Portland special.

The well-maintained paved trail and parallel stone dust path follow Casco Bay’s shoreline. One end begins in the city’s trendy Old Port section known for its cobblestone streets and ship traffic in the harbor. A former foundry that once produced steam engines dominates the area. The brick building is now the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum. Have fun riding the rails located near most of the trail.

Look for the turnoff path to Fort Allen Park to find a battleship cannon and a fort used during the Civil War and Spanish-American War. At the halfway point is East End Beach, a great spot to stop for a swim. You can also launch a kayak here or bring your dog during off season.

Journey past the park and leave the rail bed to go up a small hill. From here look for the remains of a swing bridge. The bridge was part of the Grand Trunk Railway that ran between Maine and Quebec, Canada. Turn around near this point to return to Old Port or continue by connecting with Back Cove Trail that loops for an additional 3.6 miles (5.8 kilometers) and provides a wonderful view of the city skyline.

Park at either end of the Eastern Promenade Trail on Commercial Street in Old Port or off Cutter Street in Eastern Promenade Park. Discover the multi-use features of the trail as a place to exercise or socialize during the day. Be comfortable taking an evening stroll here too as the area is lit well.
