We booked this place based on some "excellent" reviews and "good" ratings.
Upon arrival we were shockingly surprised by the dilapidated state of the building and its surroundings, which rather fits the description of a ghost town in the middle of nowhere.
Reluctantly we stepped in the lobby to be received by a wave of stagnant air, as if no one had opened the door in a hundred years. Not to mention the adverse respiratory reaction this unhealthy atmosphere triggered on my travel partner.
The front desk lady was nice and sweet. Since we quickly realized that we were not going to spend a single night in such a filthy and dilapidated place, we thanked her for sharing some haunting stories about the place's famous guest, and left. Leaving behind a cloud of dust never to look back again...
We are aware that not all travelers are looking for the same kind of experience, but it is beyond my comprehension how a place that lacks some basic amenities and is in such a state of disrepair can be even listed as a lodging option.
Needless to say that our trust on Expedia as a travel advisor has been very disappointing by this experience to say the least.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, but the property was in extreme disrepair. I was afraid some crumbling plaster over our bed was going to fall on me during the night. There were few outlets. The concrete on the walkway to the room was crumbling and dangerous. I don’t know how this properly could pass an inspection. There were few amenities. On the plus side the air conditioning worked well.

The photos online severely misrepresented the state of disrepair. Our room was not clean and the ceiling and walls were falling apart. More than just disappointing, I was embarrassed to have brought my partner there.

This place and its history is very cool! Being able to stay in a place with so much history, isn’t something you have the opportunity to do very often. With that being said, it is old and very quirky and definitely more on the lines of roughing it. If you can appreciate a cool piece of history and want to stay close to Death Valley it does the job…

No TV, coffee pot or microwave in rooms, only at front lobby common area. Rooms clean, bed was good, plenty of hot water, some things like bathroom sink replaced, but over-all the building is very old and falling apart. Some photos shown are very out of date and misleading. If you just need a place to sleep and a shower, it's okay, and if you can get in on the Opera House tour, it is very interesting.

I understand that this a "historic" motel... However, nothing was said when I made my reservation that I would have to let the water trickle for 15 minutes in order to have hot water in the shower...
As far as having hot water in the bathroom sink, that never happened...
The heater was not working properly and I had to request a space heater.
The room was very clean, however.
What was surprising in this hotel and in the room was the number of "don't do" signs and penalties you would incur if you didn't comply. I understand that this kind of signs are necessary, but there were so many of those that I was almost afraid to sleep in the bed!
Inside the motel in the hallway, there was a bucket collecting water from the leaking pipes on the ceiling...
The exterior of the hotel was very dusty. If they want us to run the shower for 15 minutes, then they sure do have enough water to spray with a hose the immediate outside grounds!
Parking was ample and safe.

With the building being around a hundred years old, you should set your expectations accordingly. We would call it rustic. Biggest down-side is the plumbing. We had to run the hot water between 30 minutes to get the water hot enough for a shower. The front desk person was very friendly though and seems quite passionate about the history of the place.

This run-down hotel is bursting with love and pride, which more than accommodate for its many obvious shortcomings. I love it. The staff were stellar -- especially Tammy, at the front desk. This hotel is not for everyone, but, for the patron of a certain ilk, it is pure magic.
