No matter where you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're well organized. We've made a list of handy tips that will get your Monte escape started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Traveling on a plane can be a comfortable experience if you pack the right stuff. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a good book. Next, leave space in your bag for your laptop, a charger, any daily medications and maybe a proper neck pillow as well. Lastly, be sure to bring your passport, travel papers and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have a Swiss Army knife lurking in one of the compartments of your hand luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive substances, such as bleach and fuel, and liquids and gels in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by donning layers, and wear easy-to-remove shoes like slip-ons.
• Most travelers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To reduce your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression socks and move your lower limbs often.

• Have your travel documents and ID at hand. They're the first items you'll be asked for by security.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like your earphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All your electronics, including your tablet and phone, are also required to be scanned separately.
• Any liquids or gels, such as perfume or hand cream, that you want to bring on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a good chance you'll be asked to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp items or pocket knives in the cabin. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked baggage.
