Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you've prepared well enough. We've put together a list of handy hints that will get your Awaji vacation started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be easy if you pack the right stuff. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a good novel. Secondly, make room in your carry-on bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your important medications and maybe a quality neck pillow too. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have sharp or pointed objects lurking in your carry-on luggage. Other banned items include flammable or explosive substances, such as fuel and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an aircraft aren't the place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfortable clothing and opt for shoes that are flat, enclosed and easy to pull on and off.
• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To reduce your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

• Be sure to keep your ID and boarding pass at hand. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to security.
• After that, both you and your carry-on bag will be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that might set the alarms off. Items such as your coat, belt and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
• For just a few moments, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your laptop, phone and any other electronic devices will need to be sent through the scanner.
• Remember to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit in a single quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Knives and other sharp items are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so put them in your checked suitcase.
