For a 5 star hotel, the service level was not up to par. Upon check in we told them it was our 30th anniversary the next day. He said ‘very nice’, and that was the end of it. In general the staff just missed opportunities to be more valuable all along the way.
We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental over my birthday and I had 5 staff wish me a happy birthday, a box of chocolates, then a dessert with a bottle of prosecco delivered to our room. They outdid themselves. The comparison at this hotel was stark. Basically if I ran this hotel chain, I would look at Mandarin Oriental and say, ‘how do we get our staff and service to be like them’. They would have years of work ahead to get there.
Normally I wouldn’t expect much, but I had just seen how good it could be.
