Discover the beauty of a popular beach in northwestern Mexico that delights with its clear, shallow water and colorful marine life.

Pack your swimsuit and sunscreen for a day of fun and relaxation at Balandra Beach which lays claim to being one of the most beautiful in Mexico. This large circular bay is flanked by desert hills and has a pristine shoreline of white sand that leads to turquoise waters.

Find a spot on the beach to stretch out on. Bring your own sunshade or lie under one of the palapas, open-sided shelters with thatched roofs. These are free for public use and are in high demand during the peak season.

Go for a paddle in the calm water. The beach is a natural pool and so the water is shallow year round. It is no deeper than waist deep for quite some distance from the shore. This makes it a great place in particular for young children and novice swimmers. Wade over to the so-called Mushroom of Balandra, a small rock formation that has been carved into its curious shape by the forces of erosion.

Put on your snorkel and mask and dip your head under the water to see the variety of colorful marine life. If you are into watersports, rent a kayak or paddleboard from the vendor located in the parking lot by the beach.

Come prepared with your own snacks and refreshments because there are no restaurants or shops here, although you may see vendors selling drinks, fruit and other snacks. Remember to bring a carrier bag to take your trash away with you. It’s also worth noting that there are no restrooms or shower facilities at Balandra.

Before you leave the beach, climb one of the surrounding hills for excellent views of the bay.

Balandra Beach is approximately 17 miles (27 kilometers) north of the city of La Paz, the state capital of Baja California Sur. To get here, drive and park in the free parking lot or travel by bus from the terminal turística, the tourist terminal in the city. The ride takes about 40 minutes.

Not nearly as beautiful as advertised. Traffic nightmare near parking lot. Very shallow water and narrow beach. Probably prettier at other times of year when water is aqua.

One new feature of La Paz is that there is a Playa Bus that runs hourly to and from this beach and Tecolote. No one at the hotel mentioned this at all, when I asked about it the person at reception said that it was a new service and they did not have any information about it. I've worked in hospitality for over 20 years, I find it odd when people who work at hotel/resorts don't know what goes on in their city.

This beach is overrated. The whole day is about 3 ft deep. It is pretty but nothing special.

Interesting topography. Might be crazy busy on a sunny, warm day!
