Qasr al Abd is a two-story Hellenistic ruin located around Iraq al-Amir, about 17 km from Amman. The heavily decorated structure features elaborately carved lions around the top. Qasr al-Abd is widely believed to have been built by a Tobiad (Toviyya in Hebrew) notable, Hyrcanus of Jerusalem. The name Qasr al Abd translates to "Castle of the Slave," which may refer to the title that Hyrcanus gave himself as the "slave of the people." This theory may be reinforced by the biblical Book of Nehemiah which mentions "Toviyya, the Servant, the Ammonite" (2:10).
