Amarante probably had its origin in the primitive peoples who inhabited the Aboboreira mountain range (inhabited since the Stone Age), although the exact name of its founders is unknown. However, it only began to gain importance and visibility after the arrival of São Gonçalo (1187-1259), born in Tagilde, Guimarães, who settled here after pilgrimage through Rome and Jerusalem. To this saint is attributed the construction of the old bridge over the River Tâmega.

"As someone already wrote on Expedia, the hot water kept cutting out after about 5 minutes. So, you had to turn off the water for about 3 minutes (while body parts stiffened or retreated into your body) until the hot water came back on. Really annoying. But, fabulous bathroom floors - solid wood, non-slip - never seen anything like it before. The couch in the living room was massively uncomfortable. There was no coffee machine in the kitchen. "The vineyard is truly beautiful. The scenery is outstanding and really adds the the luxurious feeling of this hotel. The bed was enormous, it was like having a whole double bed each. The food selection on breakfast and evening was good and not overly expensive. The only complaint would be the wait time on drinks by the pool, there was only one staff member to make drinks and sort food orders so we were often waiting a long time for drinks. This was pacified by having two pools to cool off in and lounge by. I’d absolutely stay again. "
