Towering sandstone buttes create a dramatic backdrop for guided Navajo tours through this iconic desert landscape. Wake up early to photograph the valley's famous formations in golden morning light, when fewer visitors crowd the viewpoints.

So far from anything, so hard to get to, but so worth it. The local Navajo Guides with Jeeps for hire will laugh when you say you're thinking of doing this 17-mile loop through the most famous buttes of Monument Valley in a small car, but go ahead and do it. Carefully. We saved $170 and were able to maneuver through the gulleys and rocks just fine. Driving ourselves enabled us to decide how long to spend at each spot, and whether to keep driving or get out and hike at our whim. Take water and lunch! #Navajo #MonumentValley #Arizona #landscape
