The picturesque town of Welshpool lies just 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from the border with England. It is surrounded by gorgeous countryside and filled with historic sites. Venture into a 13th-century fortress, hike along walking trails and paddle a canoe along the canal.
Start your visit with a stroll along the Heritage Trail, a route that cover 20 places of historic interest. Among the sites you will come across are timber-framed buildings from the 16th century, the 19th-century Christ Church and Powysland Museum and Canal Centre. This was a canal warehouse during the 19th century, but today covers the archaeology and social history of the region.
Also on the trail is the Town Hall, built in 1837. Come here on Saturdays and Mondays for the market, and on the first Friday of each month for the farmers' market. For more scenic walks, go to Montgomery Canal, a waterway that passes through the Welsh Marches. There are numerous nature reserves bordering the canal and a path for walking and cycling. Try and spot local wildlife, including otters and water voles. You can also paddle through the area in a canoe.
Another way to experience the beauty of the scenery here is to book a trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The old-fashioned steam train makes a 16-mile (25.7-kilometer) return trip through the green Welsh countryside.
