Spot traditional 1930s colonial homes and enjoy some gentle exercise at Rock Creek Park in this laid-back neighborhood north of Downtown Washington.

Barnaby Woods is a quiet and easy-going neighborhood of Washington D.C. Bordering a picturesque urban park, it’s an exclusively residential area, devoid of any commercialization. Visit Barnaby Woods to escape the tourist-populated areas of the city and experience its suburban lifestyle.

Enjoy a walk along the neighborhood’s tree-lined streets, where you’ll often meet residents walking their dogs. Note the prevalence of 1930s brick colonial houses, many of which stand proudly on raised mounds of land. Take a moment to admire the perfectly groomed lawns and colorful flowerbeds.

On a pleasant day, do as locals do and go to Rock Creek Park, one of the largest and oldest parks in the USA. This vast green lung runs along the neighborhood’s eastern border, stretching south toward the city center and north into the state of Maryland. Find paved and natural trails suitable for biking, horseback riding, jogging and walking. Play golf and tennis or relax with a picnic at one of the 30 designated picnic zones.

While at the park, be sure to visit Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium. Here you can pick up trail maps and sign up to ranger-led programs. Spot birds, fish and reptiles in the Nature Center. Learn about the solar system at the planetarium. Watch free outdoor summer concerts at the Carter Barron Amphitheater. Except for select public holidays, the nature center is open from Wednesday to Sunday while the planetarium is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Visit Rock Creek Park’s official website for more information and a schedule of concerts.

Located in the city’s northern section, Barnaby Woods is about a 25-minute drive from Downtown Washington. Getting here is easy via a combination of public buses and the metro. If you are feeling energetic then follow the trail that leads from Rock Creek Park to Lincoln Memorial. It’s about a 2-hour walk via parkland and along a river bank.

The hotel and room were very nice. However, we stood in the cold for a long time waiting for a shuttle that never arrived (“due to bad weather”). & shuttles in AM start at 6 am, so too late to take due to early AM.
