Pachira Lodge was a great place to stay to explore the Tortuguero area. The lodges were surrounded by the forest with plenty of animal spotting.
The buffet style restaurant let the property down with food on repeat at lunch and dinner and for the 3 nights of our stay.
The hotel is close to the Tortuguero NP which means you will probably need to get a boat to get there. Once there it is a beautiful resort with a series of cabins connected by paths. The place is teeming with life. As soon as we arrived a group of spider monkeys started playing on the path to our cabin, right in front of us. You can book many activities at the front desk. We did the canal by boat, went to see the green turtles lay eggs at the beach and a night walk to spot some animals. They also have a large pool and restaurant and bars. The one reason why I am not giving it a top score is because the cabins were pretty basic. They were clean, but matresses could have been more comfortable. The bathroom had a shower with all the basic toiletries. There was no TV, fridge or air conditioning. Luckily for us, it was not extremely hot during our stay or otherwise it would have been impossible to sleep. On the plus side it had a small terrace where you could sit and enjoy the jungle around you. Breakfast was served everyday in the main restaurant. It was good and there was plenty to choose from, with cold and hot options. We had dinner in the restaurant as well. It was buffet style with a limited number of options to choose from, but enough for the two nights we spent there. Nevertheless, I think it is one of the best options to stay near Tortuguero and enjoy all the nature around you.
Having read a lot of reviews, we expected Pachira Lodge to be a bit tired and for the food to be limited, but we were still disappointed, considering what we had paid for our stay.
The setting in the jungle is great and we saw sloths and monkeys from the pleasant pool area.
We were unfortunately not made to feel very welcome on arrival - no-one met us off the boat and we struggled to find reception to check in.
While clean, the rooms were small and dark with nowhere nice to sit outside. While we loved hearing the sound of the jungle at night, the lack of glass in the windows meant we heard everyone who passed at all times of day and night plus the loud coughing from the neighbouring room. The overhead fan in the room only runs on slow, so we were fortunate it wasn't too hot during our stay.
The food offering was definitely below par and over-priced. After sampling the evening menu on night one, we chose to eat in Tortuguero village for the rest of our stay. Once we'd worked out how it worked, the free boat transport over the lagoon to the village taking the staff home was really useful and saved us having to use a taxi boat. Breakfast was passable but 'no frills'.
We used Tortutours for our turtle tour, which was a lot better value than the tour offered by the hotel.
Overall, not a great experience. If we came to the area again, we would look to stay in a hotel in Tortuguero village to avoid having to cross the lagoon to access the national park, shops and restaurants.
The Hotel was like a cabin lodge experience. It was immersed into the nature, the pool was great, staff was so friendly. The nature awakening tour was great as well. The village is a quick 5 min boat ride.

Hotel is located in a secluded area, surrounded by nature and water, a beautiful landscape.
Room was spacious , no air conditioning but with a ceiling fan that was helpful at night. We like the Pool area with the monkeys jumping around
This is a beautiful property! We felt so peaceful and really enjoyed the beautiful pool. One thing to note is that you need to have cash to take a water taxi from the main island to the hotel!
We were upgraded to a bungalow which looked great and was extremely spacious. We felt like we were staying in the middle of the jungle. Pool area was lovely with loads of wildlife. Only downside was that the shower lacked any power.

The property is nice and lots of trees and birds chirping in the morning. There is no AC, only fans so a bit uncomfortable. Atmosphere was serene. Had to access the main town only by boat.
Very nice place, located in a piece of Heaven. Keep in mind that it is not connected by land to the town so, you are forced to pay for boat rides. It is a lovely place. (Too expensive for the service they provide, I think)
Such a beautiful place in the middle of nature. I loved their pool and food was amazing (we got the “full board” option for all of our meals paid for and it was definitely worth it, buffet style, delicious). Staff were incredible, kind and always helpful!
Clean rooms - with all you need. Since you are in the middle of the forest, you get awaken by howler monkeys and birds, which I loved - being right inside the forest. Fan helped keep it nice and fresh at night, exactly what we needed!
Perfecto location for us … in front of the town, 5 min by boat! Very private, and yet close to town!
I would definitely stay here again!! Thank you!
We were not provided with information about arrival arrangements or tours even though I had emailed the property about the latter. We were told that the last boat to the property was at 4 or 4.30pm. In fact this was for the public taxi boat and we weren't informed that we could take a private boat if we arrived late. It was all very confusing and stressful.
The property itself is beautiful with lots of animals to watch but the food is not good and we were placed at poorly placed tables and were told where to sit with little option to change places. The rooms are close together so we can hear other guests in their rooms and using the facilities. I had to ask the staff twice to change my sheets and pillows as the former was not clean and the latter smelled bad. They did eventually change them. Also the pool towel was stained do I had to ask to change that also.
The reception staff were generally nice but didn't have a lot of information which we needed.
We had good guides for the excursions organised by Pachira Lodge.
We had 4 HUGE roaches in our room when we arrived! My husband had to kill them; just so we could sleep & feel comfortable-still was hard bc we were wondering if more would come out at night & crawl all over us while sleeping!
Next night we had a lizard on our pillows before bedtime. Plus; safety wise we had No glass on the windows had to sleep with only screens on windows! Only a ceiling fan; as they don’t offer air conditioning.
The walking trail on the property is really run down & full of down trees& old moss on all the hand railings.
Swimming pool had false eyelashes on the pools ledges.
Overall, if you don’t mind roughing it-then it’s worth the price for our stay. We just felt it was too “roughing it” for our vacation.
The hotel is beautiful, rooms are good and clean
Well located, arrival is easy and activities are close by
The hotel area is great, full of nature and trails
Food was very good
These property is in the middle of a lagoon and you can only access by boat (like alll tortuguero) it has an amazing forest with lots of animals, we saw monkey birds etc.
The room is confortable it has all you need

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, amenities
The property is starting to show its age and the damp environment is taking a bit of a toll. There could have been more food choices. The walkways around the property are fabulous.
Enjoyable stay. We felt that complementary tea/coffee making facilities in the room is necessary. Most other hotels we have stayed in, in Costa-rica, provide this.

Disliked: Staff & service
Although its located in a jungle, these are cabins. Windows does not have doors just a mesh, so if you are a light sleeper it gets really noisy. Receptionists not friendly
We stayed here for three nights. Enjoyed ourselves. Standout points:
- great pool from which we spotted toucans, spider monkeys, and a variety of other wildlife
- paper thin walls in the rooms (could hear our neighbours speaking at a normal volume)
- bat and a cockroach both found their way into our room, but we’re in the jungle so… to be expected?
- front desk was - sometimes - staffed - and sometimes not
- not much to do around the property (and by that, I mean nothing, except for the pool and a small walking trail). Once you’re here, you’re stuck unless you’re taking a water taxi off the property ($5 per person each way into town)
- amazing wildlife everywhere. Crabs burrowing in holes, iguanas and green basilisks, the jungle soundtrack is truly outstanding
- eco friendly - no A/C, TVs or fridges in the rooms- basic, but you’re in the jungle. Enjoy the jungle!
- meal times felt like summer camp (food was basic); wish they had coffee in the room or coffee provided throughout the day in a localized spot
Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Pachira Lodge is remarkable. The 1 hr boat ride into Tortugero alone was amazing. The property is located in front of the main lagoon, about 5 minutes by boat from the National Tortuguero Park and 3 minutes from the quaint little Village of Tortuguero. The bungalow rooms are perfectly nestled in the middle of the jungle on raised platforms connected by raised walkways. We loved that our room didn’t have a TV. We loved our windows only had screens so we could hear the rain at night, and the monkeys and birds in the morning. Howler monkeys walked across our roof, and often played overhead. Our room had two full-sized beds and the room was modern, sleek and very clean. The bathroom was lovely. The room set up and property itself exceeded our expectations. Everything on the property is extremely well-maintained and you can see the effort put into the daily management of the lodge. We were welcomed by remarkable staff who explained everything about the property, food and amenities, and were just so accommodating and friendly. WiFi coverage was very good, which we didn't expect. The property has a seperate 1km jungle path which was absolutely beautiful and packed with wildlife. We spent one summer-like afternoon at the turtle shaped pool. We were in Arenal Hot Springs right before so thought the only thing missing at the pool area was a warm-water jacuzzi. The pool bar has awesome drinks and it feels magical to be there. We will definitely be returning to Pachira!
