  • It takes 1,000 butterflies to weigh one pound (.45kg), and the branches on this tree were sagging under the weight. The monarch colony here was quite different than at the more popular El Rosario sanctuary. 40 minutes outside Zitacuaro, near El Capulin, we chartered a couple of tiny mountain horses to take us up the rugged path to view the colony. The monarchs were clustered within a ravine, swirling around a few choice pine trees in search of sunny roosts. Whenever the sun went behind a cloud the butterflies scrambled into the air and back to the safety of the nucleus, knowing that settling down for the night outside the warmth of the colony would mean certain death.

Location amazing. View from rooms amazing. Rooms are dated. Pillows not comfortably ( too poofy). Water in the shower goes hot cold hold cold. Rooms smell from extreme moisture. Food was so so. Overall we loved th place in spite of everything because it was so relaxing and beautiful. We had no Americans there an no one spoke English other than front desk. Amazing golf, tennis , pickle ball and morning cycling classes outside. A lot of local wealthy people come here.

I had a surprisingly excellent stay at Avándaro Hotel. The service was warm, empathetic, and truly stood out—especially in how thoughtfully they accommodated a guest with special needs. The food was fresh and delicious, with two on-site restaurants and a charming coffee shop that serves the most sought-after yogurt ice cream. The amenities were spotless, and the pool was kept at the perfect temperature. Our suite was clean and comfortable, offering a relaxing stay—though there is room for improvement in the shower area. I didn’t received the VIP treat Special mention to the reception team and the staff handling transportation, who were especially kind and helpful. The hotel is also well-located, allowing for an enjoyable and safe 25-minute walk into town. I would definitely return.

This is our second time staying at this property for a family vacation. I have young children, and the facilities, like the pool, are excellent for them. The food is good, offering plenty of comfort food options. During our last visit, I was unsatisfied with the service and gave them a 3-star rating on a different platform. I believe they have improved since then, but their level of service still does not match the prices they charge. I hope they enhance their service further. Nevertheless, it's still an excellent option for people visiting the area.
