Eastern state penitentiary in Philadelphia offers a haunting look into the past of this now closed prison.
Walking through the halls of the penitentiary was scary! Reading that it is haunted didn't help.
Built in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Upon completion, it was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States. Several notorious criminals were held at Eastern State, including Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. The prison operated until 1971, after which it was closed and abandoned.
It's the first prison system in America, boy were there flaws and sadly we haven't quite evolved out of how poorly we rehabilitate prisoners.

I loved the location of this hotel, as it is so close to the art museums. If you have a car, parking can be a pain; but there are some outdoor lots you can arrange with for your car fairly close to the hotel.
