Wouldn’t Stay Again

Diane was very accommodating with storing my luggage and sharing some pointers about the neighborhood. The room was adequate in terms of accommodation but the fridge had not been cleared out and there were papers from the previous guest on the mantel. They do not serve breakfast, but rather, provide a voucher for breakfast at a place a few blocks away - in the opposite direction of where I was going, so not very useful. A colleague is going to a conference at Columbia (which was why I was there) and I recommended she find other accommodations.

Worse experience ever! Me and my husband travel a lot, we’ve been in different places around the world and never be treated like this. Diane is a terrible host who offers the house as a hotel which clearly it is not. We had to leave and pay another hotel the third day of our staying. She has false advertising in Expedia and Airbnb, which actually is illegal. We expected to much for what it was. It’s a shame that we couldn’t get our money back, but we preferred to leave and loose some money than stay another night.

Mixed experience

On the plus side, Diane was willing to fix any problems as soon as asked. The room was quiet, and the original parts of the building were interesting and attractive. On the minus side, we got charged a lot more than expected because of various upcharges, such as a surcharge for the second person. We had to pay a cleaning fee over and above the room fee. Since there were somebody else's hair on the shower drain, no waste basket, and only one towel for two of us, we weren't sure the owner was getting our money's worth out of the cleaners. Also, the modern renovations didn't entirely work. The shower leaked onto the bathroom floor and was hard to turn on. Wifi worked one evening and then not the next morning, but as an example of her helpfulness, when asked, the owner provided a network access device. The complimentary breakfast at Cafe Latte was excellent, and any time we ran into the owner, she was pleasant and helpful. The building is not marked with any kind of sign identifying it as Northern Lights Mansion. so be sure to remember the street number.

GREAT PLACE and GREAT HOST!

Northern Lights Mansion was a great place to stay, and Diane was so gracious to me. She allowed me to drop off my stuff a lot earlier than I was supposed to, and she was a great host. It has a lot of character, and you can tell she put a lot of time into restoring her place. The location is close to public transit, so it was a breeze getting to where I needed to go. I would recommend it to anyone, and I will be back!

Should have stayed at a best Western or something

This place is hard to find. There is no signage or address numbers. It is adorable inside and our room was charming. We had to climb two very steep flights of stairs with our suitcases. If you aren't strong and in shape don't stay here. We could not get the WiFi working and the TV would not work due to the WiFi not working. There was no one at the front desk in the evening to help us with this problem.

I booked the room for my father and my aunt, as my family visited NYC and my apartment turned out too small. I got only very positive comments about the accommodation and the building as well as furnishing is beautiful. Everyone loved the owner, Diane, who took her time and welcomed not only the people who were staying at the Northern Lights Mansion, but also my sister and her family whenever they were picking up family members staying there, for sightseeing. She made everyone feel welcome and comfortable!

This property is not a hotel. This property is a B&B. The building is old and dusty and the property manager has piles of paperwork everywhere in their office... I can only hope she isn't leaving guest information exposed. I cannot stress enough the LOCATION. The location of the property is in a ROUGH part of Harlem; there was literally a block party going on with people running up and down the streets the day we arrived. The business owner says there is free parking, which is true because you have to parallel park on the street, and move your car for street cleaning so it doesn't get towed. The owner asked me several times if our car was locked, as she clearly seemed concerned about theft. I feel as though the photos are misleading and would have been list disappointed had the property been rightfully advertised as a bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, my spouse and I had a family emergency, and were not able to stay for our booking. The owner of the property mislead us regarding the refund policy, much like she mislead us into reserving this property with photos that hardly resemble the actual property. We only received a partial reimbursement after begin told we could qualify for a full reimbursement. She said after the "hotels" review process we were found ineligible. After requesting details as so why, she could not substantiate any reason and proceed to tell us that is was unfortunate for the HOTEL that we had a family crisis because they lost money due to our hardship.

Beautiful Home and Excellent Hospitality

My husband was a bit concerned when I told him I booked this room in Harlem but because I had previously lived in Harlem I didn't share his concerns. The neighborhood was colorful and homey and parking was an issue, but the beauty of the brownstone more than made up for any concerns about the neighborhood. We only stayed one night but I felt right at home from the moment we entered the door. Diane is a lovely hostess, she offered a superb cafe latte which took away the chill from the crisp Fall evening and made me look forward to morning coffee the next day. The brownstone has been completely renovated with such fine attention to detail. Our room was spacious and comfortable in every way. The white marble bathroom was sparkling clean and the shower was my husband's favorite thing all together. Besides the lovely hospitality and genuine kindness from Diane, the owner, this was a experience and we highly recommend Northern Lights for your next visit to New York City.
