South of vacation hub NegrilOpens in a new window is a strip of stunning rocky cliffs jutting out over a sparkling sea.

For swimming or lounging at a sandy beach, West End is a real treat. Marvel at 7 miles (11 kilometers) of limestone cliffs curving around the south from the Jamaican hotspot of Negril. The water is warm and clear and the luxury hotels stand amid a relaxed, friendly community.

Spend a day floating on the bright aquamarine ocean or rent a bike and travel around the region at your own pace. Plunge from different heights into the sea or go for a swim or snorkel. In the evening, watch the sun setting over the huge blue horizon.

Along the cliffs are perched tin-roofed hotels and villas. Find many popular places to eat seafood or jerk chicken and drink rum or Red Stripe. Select from luxurious accommodations choices. Some resorts have their own caves for guests to explore. The Xtabi cove has an intricate seaside labyrinth, carved by nature over millions of years. Behind the cliffs and among the trees you’ll find a sunny village offering a glimpse of Jamaica’s non-tourist side.

Local daredevils put on a show at Rick’s Cafe, located on one the most picturesque cliff sections. Watch people making thrilling jumps from great heights into the sea. If you’re feeling bold, join the divers. If not, simply enjoy the renowned views.

Spend hours staring out at the Caribbean at the Negril LighthouseOpens in a new window, just off the winding thoroughfare of West End Road. Here you’ll find an intriguing snapshot of daily life in this part of Jamaica as local vendors set up shop. Continue on this road to find Murphy’s West End, a beloved traditional restaurant with hammocks and live bands.

West End hasn’t always attracted large numbers of international visitors so it remains a peaceful, quiet community. There have been traditions of hippies gathering on the West End. As in Negril, expect some beach areas with clothing-optional sunbathing. Use “route taxis” or the official taxis from your hotel to get around the area.
