Lyon’s architectural highlights are strewn across this meeting point of wealth, religion and gastronomy. Visit the bank headquarters and medieval church.

Centered on its namesake broad avenue, Les Cordeliers is a busy hub in the heart of Lyon. The narrow strip of land containing many of the city’s architectural gems is bordered by the waterways of the Rhône and the Saône. Try the local delicacies in the chocolate shops and cafés on this peninsula, before exploring its attractions on foot.

Emerging from the metro station, you’ll spot the Shrine of St. Bonaventure. Admire the large rose window of this medieval religious structure. Venture inside for the array of Baroque relics and works of art. Note that the former convent from which the district takes its name was destroyed in the 1798 revolution, but the church survived.

Go next door for the Palais de la Bourse, which contains the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lyon. The important building is topped by an elegant clock and made up of arched windows and portals.

The financial importance of the region is demonstrated by the banks lining the roads. Stroll along the wide avenues and investigate the array of boutiques and stores. You’ll find many restaurants and cafés, where you can stop and enjoy a meal and people-watch. Try the creamed fish dish, known as quenelles, which is typical of the region.

Stay into the evening and go to a bar or chocolate shop after your meal. Watch a show at the Théâtre Comédie Odéon. In the northwestern corner of the district stands the Église Saint-Nizier, built over many centuries, with two Gothic spires rising above the surrounding buildings.

Arrive via the Les Cordeliers metro station in the center of Lyon’s 2nd Arrondissement. Walk east from the Gare de Saint Paul for a few minutes, crossing the Pont de la Feuillée or the Pont Alphonse Juin, to reach this area. It is sandwiched between the districts of Griffon-Royale and Bellecour Hôtel Dieu.
