Marvel at this medieval town built on a rocky tidal island, with narrow alleys winding up to the monastery at its peak.

The beautiful island of Le Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the great wonders of France. The cluster of historic structures built into the island’s rising terrain attract visitors from across the globe. Learn about its important role in the military and religious history of the country and wander the quaint streets lined with shops and restaurants.

Legend has it that the 8th-century bishop of Avranches, St. Aubert, was asked to construct a church on the island by the Archangel Michael, who pierced a hole in the bishop’s skull while trying to convince him to begin construction. Examine the bishop’s relics at the Notre Dame des Champs in the town of Avranches, located about 30-minutes’ drive northeast of Le Mont-Saint-Michel.

The island covers an area of 247 acres (100 hectares) with a population of less than 50 people. Though now an iconic tourist destination, this unusual little town was once used as a strategic fortification, protecting the north of France from attack. Discover more about its past as you explore.

Follow pilgrims and curious visitors to the Abbey of the Mont-Saint-Michel sitting at the top of the island. Amble through the spiritual buildings of the abbey, which was first established in the 10th century. One of the prettiest views of the island is from across the water on the mainland. The scene is particularly enchanting at night when the fortifications are illuminated.

Visit the Musée Historique to inspect ancient weapons and horrifying torture instruments. Find out more about the prison that was once housed in the abbey.

Watch the Archéoscope multimedia show and hear about the myths and legends associated with the abbey. Back at the base of the island are an assortment of restaurants, cafés and shops housed in centuries-old buildings.

Le Mont-Saint-Michel is about half a mile (1 kilometer) off the northwest coast of France near the city of Avranches. Cross the modern bridge from the mainland to reach the island. Consider walking across the mudflats to the island during low tide. Fly into Paris or Rennes and travel to Le Mont-Saint-Michel by train, bus or car.

Relish the beauty of Le Mont-Saint-Michel, one of the most photographed sights in France.

This was our first time in Mont St Michel. This hotel is located right off the Main Street near the entrance. It was easy to find. Staff was very helpful since you have to park your car off the site and then take a shuttle bus. Staff helped us to navigate that. The stairs were narrow as expected ...

We heard it gets very busy during the summer months so if you want to avoid the crowds, early November was a perfect time. Not too cold and all the shops and restaurants were still open.
