I stayed there in November, and the views completely won me over. The hotel is in a fairly rural area, and the road going uphill is quite rough, so having a 4×4 with high clearance is definitely recommended. My room was small and not soundproof, so you can hear your neighbors and the office. It also absorbed a noticeable fuel-oil smell from the nearby parking area or building, which took away from the otherwise beautiful natural surroundings. The views on the lake and a huge variety of birds outside are amazing.

Best View in Costa Rica.. could be a 5 star!

We stayed 3 nights and over all I’m giving 9, it could be a 10! The service was very helpful, Joel switched our room because the one they gave us was not what we booked. The casita was huge, with an amazing view, lots of hot water, floor fans, and super quiet. The pool was a great added benefit. Where it fell short, the kitchen very basic, but workable. The fridge had issues, there are no lamps or nightstands, no hangers or even rods for them. Bathroom a bit dull and dark. A coat a paint and a trip to Ikea would solve all. Breakfast is served down the hill an easy walk, The Phoenix, is more than enough and they do dinner.. try the custom made pizza!

Nepenthe is a gem. You need to grab this stay for as long as it stays a gem, the owners are getting older and are actively trying to sell. Make this trip, you will not regret it. Stay for the week, there is plenty to do around Arenal, do not spend hours driving that you could spend listening to the howler monkeys, watching the toucans every morning, or enjoying the oropendola living their day.

Estuvimos acá por nuestra luna de miel. Sin lugar a dudas ha sido una grata experiencia. Está muy lejos de todo, sin embargo eso permite que conectes con la selva y la naturaleza de un manera asombrosa. Nuestra estadía no pudo estar completa sin la amabilidad de Fabián Acuña, quien fue quien nos recibió, nos ayudó a hacer tours y estuvo muy al pendiente de nosotros, sin lugar a dudas lejos de un simple trabajador lo pude considerar un amigo. Que siempre estuvo preocupado y considerando cualquier detalle hasta nuestra partida no solo del hotel si no del aeropuerto. Mil gracias Nepenthe por la experiencia tan agradable y sobre todo por la atención de Fabián.

La ubicación es buena y las vistas desde la propiedad son increíbles. Nuestra villa (n. 7) necesita arreglos, por ejemplo los baños. También tienen un problema por la noche ya que aparecen muchísimos insectos alrededor de la cocina (arañas, hormigas, etc).

We enjoyed our stay here. The property was quiet. The jungle and bird noises were not, which was an appeal for us. We sat on the patio and saw many different bird species at various times of the day. The restaurant was fabulous. I would describe it as comida tipica, which is what we like. The best part was the restaurant staff—friendly and hospitable. The room itself was dated and needed some updating in terms of general maintenance and comfort. We were in unit 4 near the restaurant. I can’t speak for other units. The pool is lovely, though some more comfortable seating—other than iron chaise lounges—would be nice. The views are gorgeous and this property has good access to the national parque for volcan Arenal and access to the Observatory Lodge for many trails and a good lunch option. It’s about a 25 min drive to downtown La Fortuna, which was great for us. If you like crazy, busy touristy places, then this isn’t your jam. Check in was easy and Fabian very welcoming.

Great view. Staff were sweet and helpful. Massage on-site was top-tier. Room was comfortable but ants lined counter of kitchen all the way across to pantry. Noticed after they invaded our snacks. 4x4 a MUST.

Not the smoothest of steep roads up the hill but well worth it when you get there. Takes about ten minutes off the main road so not handy if you are heading in and out all the time but so secluded and quiet when you are there. The view alone is worth the effort. The spacious room was more than adequate.

Zufahrt zur Unterkunft:katastrophal!, OffRoad pur, ungeteert, sehr steil, übersät mit teilweisen sehr tiefen Schlalgöchern, nicht ungefährlich für normale Pkws. Zimmer: altes verbrauchtes Mobiliar. Positiv, Kühlschrank in jedem, Zimmer Bad: lediglich funktionstüchtig, sehr veraltet! Lage: Top! Super Ausblick, mit Pool, Aussenanlage sehr gepflegt! Restaurant: urig, offen, sehr freundliches Personal Fazit: Preis/Leistungsverhältins insgesamt nur Mittelmaß

Important thing is the access road to the property. You need a high clearance vehicle (SUV) to drive on the 2km none-paved hilly road. Property is generally okay with a nice view. Breakfast is good from their own restaurant but not the expensive pizza for dinner they made on pre cooked crust.

Nice Place

Nice place once there, but difficult to get there. I recommend using a 4x4 vehicle if possible. Room was very clean. The restaurant service was very friendly and food was good, the restaurant building could use a good refurbishment.
