See the rich history behind the juke joints and blues bars in Mississippi’s City with Soul.

Jackson, Mississippi is a sophisticated city with a unique flavor, heralded as the “City with Soul.” From its beginnings as home to the Choctaw Native American Nation to the birth of blues and soul music, Jackson has many stories to tell. Head downtown and investigate the city’s dynamic music scene. Drop in at a local bar or diner, put a few quarters in the jukebox and let Jackson do the rest.

Jackson’s compact historic downtown features many attractions within walking distance of the Amtrak station. Learn about the Civil Rights Movement at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, which celebrates the rich heritage of cultural and historical contributions made by African-American people in Mississippi. The museum, open Monday through Saturday,  is just a short walk from the historic State Capitol Building.

Downtown Jackson offers cultural attractions, such as the Arts Center of Mississippi, a cultural complex which also houses the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. The center hosts a wide range of cultural exhibitions, projects with local artists and seasonal events. Call ahead to find out what programs are scheduled during your visit to Jackson.

Explore the Jackson Zoo, featuring informative tours and a diverse range of exotic and native animals. Discover the state’s exciting wildlife at the Wilderness Mississippi exhibition. The zoo is open daily during regular business hours. Visit on Tuesday to enjoy half-price admission.

Kids will be captivated by the wonders of the earth at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Immerse yourself in informative and interactive displays, both indoor and outdoor. Walk one of six nature trails surrounding the museum and explore Mississippi’s natural environment.

Reach Jackson via Jackson-Evers International Airport, or take an Amtrak train or interstate highways 20 or 55. Jackson typically has warm, humid summers and wet winters and springs. Winters are quite mild, but be prepared for frequent thunderstorms in the cooler months.

Jackson claims to have “just about the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.” Visit the City with Soul to find out for yourself.
