Speed down whitewater rapids, ride an aerial tram and look for eagles soaring through the skies at this scenic state park.

Glide over the rapids of the rushing water during exhilarating rafting expeditions at Hawks Nest State Park. Trek along the spectacular hiking trails and try to spot some of the interesting bird species that reside here. The park encompasses 276 acres (112 hectares) of breathtaking wilderness next to the New River Gorge National River.

During summer, an aerial tramway operates between Hawks Nest Lodge and the marina at the bottom of the New River Gorge. Purchase tickets to ride the tram and marvel at the aerial views of the forest and river valley below. Jet boats provide rides during the summer season, carrying passengers across the river and under the New River Gorge Bridge. This single-span steel structure stands 876 feet (267 meters) above the water.

Bring the children to the River Nature Center to learn about plant and animal life in the park. After you’ve familiarized yourself with nature in the region, follow the hiking trails to experience it for yourself. Beginners can stroll along the easy Hawks Nest Rail Trail, which leads past two bridges, a waterfall and the remains of a coal mine. For a more challenging route, try the demanding Cliffside Trail.

As you explore, watch for birds in the air and trees. Hawks, vultures and even bald and golden eagles occasionally fly overhead. Several whitewater rafting tour operators are located near the park too. Embark on a rafting expedition through steep drops and chutes or tackle the more difficult whitewater terrain of the Gauley River.

For something more tranquil, fish and hunt in the park during allowed seasons. You’ll need to purchase a license in advance. Bring food and eat it in the picnic areas or dine at the Hawks Nest Lodge Restaurant, where windows overlook New River vistas.

Hawks Nest State Park is just over an hour’s drive of Charleston, West Virginia.
