"A Viking hall with a thoroughly modern room behind it I stayed in one of the newer rooms and it’s an easy A+. What Europe calls a double twin reads as a king to an American, and the room is freshly appointed with all the modern amenities — warm lighting, good linens, and a beautifully done bath with herringbone tile, stone vanity and a black vessel sink. The new section also comes with robes and access to the geothermal hot tub, and the sauna is still there, tucked in by the hot spring. Both are worth your time — don’t skip them. What drew me here was the setting. The Viking theme is the real thing: carved timber, turf roofs, dragon-head gables. That’s what separates this place from your typical hotel, and I mean that as a compliment. Reykjavík is the main harbor and very tourist-driven. Hafnarfjörður is an oceanfront town with real local character, and the bus makes the difference a non-issue — tap your card, about five dollars, in and out of the city all day. One thing that surprised me and shouldn’t have: the heat here is geothermal, straight out of the ground, and the tap water is the best I’ve ever tasted. Cold, crisp, clean — no filter, no bottle, just turn the faucet. And for anyone who’s heard about the sulfur smell in Icelandic hot water — there’s none of it here. The showers run clean. After forty years around kitchens and dining rooms, that’s the kind of detail I notice. If you want the sights without sleeping in the middle of them, stay here."
