Explore pristine beaches, coral reefs, colonial heritage sites and a sand island filled with rainforests, lakes, dingoes and historical structures.

With its imposing sand dunes, scenic coastline and pockets of rainforest, the Fraser Coast of Queensland is spectacular. Its unique biodiversity has lead the UNESCO to declare part of it a protected Biosphere Reserve. Spot whales frolicking in the bay, dingoes on Fraser Island and the colourful fish of the Great Barrier Reef.

The seaside town of Hervey Bay is the perfect launching point for your Fraser Coast adventures. Stroll down the Esplanade and have lunch in one of the cafés with ocean views. In summer and autumn, join a cruise to see humpback whales and dolphins.

Take the ferry to the protected habitat of Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. Hire a four-wheel drive vehicle to get around on the island, or board the ferry on foot and organise a pick-up and tours from the island’s upscale resort. Cruise down 75 Mile Beach to the Maheno Shipwreck and swim in the fresh waters of Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby in the island’s interior. If you are a keen hiker and self-sufficient, do the Fraser Island Great Walk. The trail leads through dense rainforest and you can camp on the beach. You’ll need a park permit for both driving and camping.

Half an hour inland by car from Hervey Bay is the colonial-era town of Maryborough. Visit the weekly Heritage City Market for local food and crafts and tour the Military & Colonial Museum or Brennan & Geraghty’s Store Museum. Maryborough is the birthplace of P.L.Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, who is honoured with an annual theatre festival in June and July.

A short flight from Hervey Bay brings you to Lady Elliot Island, where you can dive in the tropical waters to explore the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef.

Hervey Bay has bus, train and plane connections with the state capital Brisbane, which is a 3.5-hour drive away by car. Hiring a four-wheel drive is recommended to explore “Nature’s Perfect Playground”: the Fraser Coast.
