We returned to Christchurch after our trip in the south island and got an upgrade to a suite. We were very impressed and sorry we could not stay extra nights because we were leaving the next day. The breakfasts could have been more interesting.

Disliked: Staff & service
Great Front Desk and Concierge, but after that...
Check in Staff (Dean) was great, lovely and friendly and helpful. Couldn't speak highly enough of the Concierge. But.... Breakfast staff were most unhelpful, had to stop a stone faced staff member to get my pot of tea and toast. But food was very nice and tasty.
Room was average, what you expect for price, but would pay no more. Bathroom could have been a bit cleaner - hair in bath bit yuck.
Rooms ready for a refurb tho if they want to claim a 4 star listing.
But overall a good stay.
Everything was beautiful, clean and new. A wonderful stay.

Liked: Cleanliness, room comfort
Grand Chancellor CHCH NZ
Very handy to town and main attractions.
Rooms still in repair sue to the earthquake but still very liveable and clean. Really good considering what the city has been through, a pleasant stay and we would recommend them to all going to Christchurch.
Was not impressed with this hotel. I have stayed in many hotels over the years and this one has to be one of the worst. To make things worse I am in the hotel business as my profession and what I experienced at this hotel was unacceptable, especially for the price paid. The room upon check-in had the previous occupants bodily fluids on the toilet seat (which was dried) so it had been there for awhile. And the dresser had dry up coffee stain. The restaurant was slow. Even with being the only table in the restaurant occupied the server was slow and the food coming from the kitchen even slower. This performance was repeated the next evening and at breakfast. During breakfast food for my party of 2 was brought out at different times so the other person had to watch the other person eat and vice versa when their food was finally presented.
Good things: Internet cafe. Close to activities.
Bad things: Dirty room, slow restaurant service, felt like a number and not a valued client.
Very friendly, clean and spacious rooms for an older hotel. Stayed on level 24 facing Sth / West. Great views of Christchurch. Close to everything. Would stay again when visiting Christchurch.
very pleasant stay; convenient to all the city's attractions; walking distance to restaurants and ciy square. Excellent staff; all helpful and friendly
We did not stay long in this hotel, so the stay was short and sweet. Excellent service. They even upgraded us to a family room with a fantastic view at no charge. Would definitely go back!
Very convenient to the downtown shopping area and to tourist sites.
The hotel staff were very helpful in booking a shuttle to the airport. The breakfast was very good and the restaurant staff were very attentive.
After a long days drive the check in was fast and efficient. The valet parking was taken care of and the luggage transferred to the room. The concierge was most helpful in suggesting places to eat. The room was on the top floor with good views and the second bedroom was upstairs. Very good facilities and very good location.
This hotel was exactly what we needed for our 4 night stay in Christchurch. Very central to Cathedral Square but probably quieter than those hotels actually on the square.
Considering we arrived just a week after the earthquake the place was running very smoothly indeed with no inconvenience to guests whatsoever. There were a couple of cracks visible in the hallway on our floor but markings around them suggest these had been thoroughly inspected. Considering the hotel had obviously taken quite a shake, they had recovered very quickly and professionally.
The reception staff are as friendly as any we have come across, the concierge staff in particular faultless in their performance.
Breakfast was fresh and tasty, dining facilities comfortable.
We had a standard room with what is advertised as 2 queen beds. This would be my only quibble, in Australia we would refer to the beds as "double" not queen. They were perfectly adequate for our needs but it is a little misleading if you actually require queen beds.
Otherwise, faultless stay and highly recommended.
The hotel is in a very convenient location within easy walking distance of shops and cafes. The staff were very obliging and professional and the hotel outfitting and amenities were excellent. I would love to stay in this hotel again and would be happy to recommend it to any other travellers.
Even though there had been a major earthquake just days prior to our arrival there was absolutely no evidence of this anywhere within the hotel. It was business as usual with the staff and amenities which was very reassuring.
We arrived in Christchurch just following the earthquake and were made to feel very comfortable and secure at the hotel.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, from the porter who wouldn't let us carry anything, to the girls who served the breakfast.
Lovely hotel!
Excellent service and reasonable size rooms with everything that you could need.
Right in the heart of Christchurch with a short walk to the city mall and to Cathedral Square
Buffet breakfast has a good range of choices and dinner as superb.
Only problem was the beds not being made and the bins not emptied one day out of the five but this was fixed with a quick phone call.
Very good location, easy short walk to Cathedral Square where you catch the trams &$7.00 transport to the airport, food outlets ,markets and shops all located nearby. This is the place to be.
The hotel was clearly once a very nice hotel, but it was run down and a bit tarnished. Room service was hit and miss with them forgetting out orders a few times. The concierge was excellent.
