Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) lurking in the bottom of your hand luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive goods, such as fuel and fireworks, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of your airplane are not the place for a fashion parade. Layer yourself up with comfortable clothes and pack a cardigan as it can get quite cool inside the cabin. Closed-toed, flat shoes are also a good choice.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by reduced mobility or inactivity. There are many ways to lessen your risk. Wear compression tights or socks, drink lots of water and get your legs and feet moving. Do a few laps of the cabin or try out some simple stretches in your seat.

As seasoned travelers know, the secret is to be well prepared before you get to airport security. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to Puget in no time flat. Follow these helpful tips and get your trip off to a flying start:

• Security personnel first need to know that you have a valid ID and travel documents before anything else. Have them close by, ready for inspection.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your belt, coat, keys and other items in your pocket, like your headphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All electronic devices, including your phone and laptop, will also need to be separately scanned.
• Remove gels and liquids from your carry-on luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit in a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-close bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you a few precious minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp items or pocket knives to come on board with you. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked luggage.
