• A plane ride can be easy if you take the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a clean pair of socks and a few magazines. Next, find a spot in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, any vital medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, don't forget to take your passport, travel documents and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated by security. Sharp or pointed objects, like your beloved pocket knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, flares and matches, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your priority when choosing what to wear on your flight. Loose, breathable clothing is a sensible choice, as are enclosed shoes like sneakers.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-distance flights. It results from blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.
