• It's easy — first, pack in your passport, travel docs, credit cards and medications. Next, you'll want some entertainment to while away the time. A thrilling book and a laptop crammed with your favorite shows are always good options. If you intend to catch a few z's, a comfy neck pillow and some earplugs will also come in handy. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have a pocket knife lurking in one of the zippers of your hand luggage. Other banned items include explosive or flammable products, like aerosols and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer your clothing and opt for shoes that are closed-toe, flat and easy to slip on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It results from blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.

• Security personnel first need to know that you have a valid passport and matching boarding pass before anything else. Have them ready to show.
• Your belt, coat, keys and other contents of your pockets, like coins, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.

• Any gels or liquids, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-close bag.
