• The secret to having an amazing flight experience is to be prepared. Start with the essentials: passport, boarding pass, bank cards and medications. Next, bring on board items that'll help keep you occupied, like your laptop or a few magazines. You'll also want to bring your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earphones. And of course, be sure to chuck in toiletries like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a clean set of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have a pocket knife lurking in your hand luggage. Other restricted items include explosive or flammable substances, such as bleach and fuel, and liquids and gels in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your main concern when choosing what to wear during your flight. Loose, breathable clothing is a sensible choice, as are flat, slightly roomy shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Walk around the cabin and give your legs a stretch or do some simple exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

The trick is to be well organized before you get to airport security. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Al in next to no time. Follow these tips and get your trip off to a terrific start:

• Your ID and travel documents will need to be presented to security personnel. Keep them within easy reach so you don't hold up the queue.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your coat, belt, keys and other small items, like coins, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• For just a few minutes, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your phone, tablet and any other electronic devices must also be sent through the scanner.
• Can't travel without your favorite perfume or cologne? As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you're permitted to bring it with you in your carry-on luggage.
• It's also possible you'll be required to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a smart idea.
• Airlines won't allow any pocket knives or other sharp items in your carry-on luggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked luggage.
