Follow walking trails that wind through tree-covered cliffs to viewpoints and admire a spectacular waterfall, impressive rock formations and sprawling forests.

Gaze in amazement at the striking natural beauty of the Cascada Cola de Caballo (Horsetail Falls). Wander amid tree-covered cliffs, spot colorful wildlife and snap epic photographs. The waterfall is formed by water that runs down from the mountains of nearby Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey.

The paved trail to the waterfall is short and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Pause at the various observation platforms to admire colorful flora and see myriad birdlife. At the main observation point, enjoy frontal views and great photo opportunities of the 82-foot-tall (25-meter) waterfall. Observe how the streams of water fan out in the shape of a horsetail as they splash over the imposing rocks. Look away from the waterfall and watch the water pouring over rounded boulders and into the pools below.

Bring lunch to enjoy at the designated picnic area or make use of the public barbecues. Otherwise, purchase food and refreshments from the handful of snack bars. Walk or ride horseback along the trails.

After seeing the waterfall, visit the nearby Hotel Hacienda Cola de Caballo. Here, enjoy thrill-seeking sports such as bungee jumping and zip-line canopy tours. Brave a 230-foot (70-meter) jump from a treetop platform located high above forested hills. Alternatively, relax in the hotel’s hot tub and spa.

Located in Villa de Santiago, the waterfall is about 28 miles (45 kilometers) southeast of Monterrey. The most convenient way to get here is via rented car. Use the low-cost parking available at the entrance to the trails. Tour operators in downtown Monterrey run organized tours to the waterfall too. Public buses operate between Monterrey and Villa de Santiago.

The Cascada Cola de Caballo is open daily and has an admission fee. Visit the Hotel Hacienda Cola de Caballo’s official website for further information and prices.
