I was disappointed that the operator of the B&B reacted strongly against my entering the establishment with my shoes on, said she had a sign posted but upon leaving I noticed it was on the back of the front door. I guess it’s “normal” to walk barefoot in NZ. I’m over 60 years old wearing new shoes and came from the airport. My shoes weren’t dirty and she said this was the policy of the B&B. Also she had a large cat which roamed, got on the furniture, etc. The problem is I’m allergic to cats and there was no warning in hotels.com. They have a key pad lock on the front door that was temperamental. Other guests said they had similar issues. I rang the doorbell and another guest came to the door but told me through the glass that the owner forbad guests from opening the door for other guests. The operator also made me read the house rules. Yep it says you can’t open the door for other guests. Apparently you can’t bring pork into the premises due to the owners religious beliefs. I found the whole vibe off-putting and obviously the owner is not a true Kiwi. When asked about it the owner said, yeah I probably should put in the house rules into hotels.com. Ya think.
Breakfast consists of box cereal that you will share with other guests and freeze dried coffee. This is not proper NZ etiquette. I’m sorry but with rules/cat situation, I didn’t ever feel comfortable staying there. The location is not near restaurants, etc. I don’t recommend.
