With a townscape of quaint buildings and a church spire, Assmannshausen is a quiet hamlet on the curve of the Rhine River. The chairlift takes passengers to the Jagdschloss Niederwald hotel in the countryside. Hike over the verdant hills for about 30 minutes to reach the Niederwalddenkmal monument in its eponymous landscape park. Back in the Assmannshausen quarter, stroll up and down the steep, meandering lanes. Bring hiking boots and embark on the Rheinsteig trail. Visit the late-Gothic church and inspect its impressive altarpiece and 15th-century Madonna. Marvel at the 12th-century basilica of the Clemens Chapel.
Relax at a restaurant or bar and try the region’s famous pinot noir red wine. Among the highlights is the VDP estate in the village. Note that the warm summers and cool winters of the region are ideal for vineyards. Relax in the lithium springs at the spas and rest your feet at the Kurhaus (Cure House).
Enjoy the views of the majestic Rheinstein Castle on the other side of the water and cross the river to visit this hilltop treasure. The castle, which dates back to the 14th century, appears to sprout from the rocky crevasses and lush vegetation overlooking the river.
Find the town on a bend in the Rhine River in the Rheingau region of western Germany. Fly to Frankfurt am Main Flughafen Fernbahnhof and drive west for about 50 minutes to get here. You can also take a train from the airport to the town and get around via buses and ferries.
