Spend the day sailing, windsurfing, golfing or swimming at one of the most popular beaches in the city.

Despite its proximity to the city center, this 4-mile (6-kilometer) stretch of the Costa Blanca is nearly perfect. It’s impeccably clean, has a relaxed atmosphere and is free from the tourist trappings found at other Spanish beaches. Instead, local bars and cafés line the beach and promenade, offering traditional Spanish cuisine, drinks and conversation. Playa de San Juan is Alicante’s most popular beach, but a short walk along the sand will reveal plenty of quiet spots to set up for the day.

While the tall palms that run along the promenade provide some shade from the Mediterranean sun, visitors wanting to spend the day at the water’s edge are advised to rent an umbrella from one of the stalls along the beach. Lounges and deck chairs are also available. There is a concentration of restaurants, bars and stores at the city end of the beach, and vendors will be sure to come to you if you wait long enough. Cold drinks, sandwiches and even sunglasses can be purchased right from your seat in the sand.

The water at Playa de San Juan is crystal clear. Children will love playing in the shallow water the conditions make it an ideal destination for families with younger kids. Windsurfing is popular at Playa de San Juan, and equipment rental is available. Rent a ball and try your hand at beach volleyball or join in a game of beach soccer with the locals. Golfers will love the beach’s proximity to the Alicante Golf Course, located directly behind the beach.

A 20-minute tram ride will take you directly from the city center to the Playa de San Juan beach. Those arriving by car will find designated parking areas behind the promenade for a small fee. Like most beaches in the area, Playa de San Juan is open to the public and there is no fee.
