April 2011 Medresa Thaalibiya, Algiers This fine medresa and mosque was built in 1904 by French architect Henry Petit in beautiful harmonic neo-moorish style. It is named after marabout (patron saint of the city) Sidi Abd-er- rahman-et-Thalbi (1387-1471), hence the Thaalibiya name. It has served as a school of islamic law, general islamic school for muslim children and as a mosque. The view with the sea and white multistoreyed appartement houses with blue windows is the essence of Algiers to me.
Notre Dame d'Afrique, also known as “Madame Afrique” or “Lella Myriam” is located in the Z'Ghara district. It stands 124 meters above sea level in the western districts of Algiers. The basilica was completed in 1872 after 14 years of work, it is the work of the French architect Jean Eugène Fromageau. Its symbolic and religious importance can be summed up by the inscription on the apse: Notre Dame d'Afrique priez pour nous et pour les Musulmans ("Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims") #History Photo Contest #histort
