Waterfall of Mino

Once visited by mountain ascetics like En no Gyōja, this 33-meter cascade has been associated with Shugendō practice and mythical dragon guardians said to protect the valley. Today, the waterfall is a serene escape from the city—surrounded by lush forest, playful monkeys, and the calming sounds of rushing water. We spend about an hour here relaxing, enjoying the view, eating lunch, and sampling local specialties like crispy maple leaf tempura. It’s a refreshing break and a highlight of the walk.

It's said that Bentendo was founded by En no Gyōja, the legendary mountain sage, to honor Benzaiten, the goddess of water, music, and all things that flow. Ryuanji temple is not flashy like Katsuoji, but it offers something rarer—a calm, reflective space steeped in mountain mysticism. According to local lore, monkeys who once meditated here were transformed into a protective dragon spirit—giving the temple its name: "Dragon Hermitage."
