The Castle and Garden Admission is a Self-Guided Tour of the Castle, and provides access to the Castle, Historic Tower with 360 views, Beautiful Gardens of International Significance, Ballroom Cafe, Boutique Gift Shop, and outbuildings such as the Historic Stables. Learn about the Castle's history through the written guides available in multiple languages.
Built in 1871, the exquisite craftsmanship and architecture of the Castle is a gothic revival masterpiece. With new world echoes of old-world grandeur, the Castle is wrapped in lace verandahs and offers an insight into Victorian culture at a pivotal time in Dunedin and New Zealand’s history.
The Castle is surrounded by seven acres of gardens and is a Garden of International Significance. The unique collection of specialised gardens includes the Patterned Garden, the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, the Rain Forest, the South Seas Garden, the Alice Lawn, and the Laburnum Arch and Green Room.
The Castle continues to be lovingly restored by the Barker Family. Situated on the picturesque Otago Peninsula, we are 25-minutes from the heart of Dunedin.
