What you can expect

Treat yourself to a relaxing evening on a kayak, witnessing Auckland's authentic glowing nature. Get kitted out with all the gear you need and then paddle off into the evening with your personalised 1-6 ratio (guide-guests) group to witness the sea lights.

As the sun dips below the horizon, join us for a serene and awe-inspiring evening paddle, where you’ll witness the mesmerising glow of the smallest marine creatures.

What to Expect:

A Magical Evening: Glide through tranquil waters under the starlit sky and witness the other-worldly brilliance of bioluminescence up close.

Unforgettable Adventure: Perfect for families, friends, or solo explorers. Our knowledgeable and friendly guides ensure a comfortable, safe and memorable experience.

Two Hours of Wonder: Enjoy a peaceful two-hour tour as you discover the glow of bioluminescent organisms in their natural habitat.

What is Bioluminescence? Bioluminescence is a captivating natural reaction that produces light within an organism’s body. Bioluminescent plankton light up the evening, creating a dazzling display of natural wonder.

While bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed, we operate during peak season and carefully plan each trip around the best conditions. It is very rare for us not to see at least one type of bioluminescence. Our tours take you out into the dark world of the ocean shoreline; it is such a different place at night.

While bioluminescence is our target, so much more is there to enjoy. On many nights, customers comment on how amazing the stars are, with many saying they have never seen so many. Or the likelihood of watching satellites move across the sky, or just the peaceful paddling along in this strange setting of nighttime paddling, that most never experience. So come with an open mind to take in a range of amazing experiences and rest assured that the vast majority of our customers see bioluminescence. In the rare case that bioluminescence isn't visible during your tour (as verified by your guide on the night*), we offer either a 50% refund or a complimentary repeat tour.

Join Us: Come and embark on this spectacular adventure! Experience the glow of bioluminescence and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones or on your own. The tour is suitable for children 11 years and over but must be accompanied by an adult. Younger children are welcome but please contact Canoe & Kayak directly before booking.

Canoe & Kayak Ltd have been operating kayak tours since 1994 and is still owned by Peter Townend an original founder. You will often find Peter leading or supporting these trips.

As the Managing Director he insists on a very low guide ratio of 1 GUIDE TO 6 CUSTOMERS, this ensures that safety is first and that every participant gets personal service that is second to none.

*Lack of bioluminescence must be verified by the guide on the night.
