Swakopmund featuring surfing, general coastal views and waves
See the hulks and ruins on the foggy Skeleton Park coastline and learn about the regional history in the town’s German institutions.

Swakopmund is a fascinating colonial town that stands between the swirling Atlantic Ocean and arid Namib Desert. It is an intriguing destination affected by German settlers and an ideal base for exploration of the Skeleton Coast National Park and the desert. Wander through the historic center to get a sense of local culture.

Spend some time in the Swakopmund Museum on the location of an old harbor warehouse to learn about the town’s history. Study exhibits on the regional wildlife and vegetation and learn about the cultural significance of the nara melon. Piece together the history of the nation, from the indigenous Khoekhoen peoples to the mining industry and colonial period.

Adjacent to the museum is the Swakopmund Lighthouse, which dates back to 1902 and continues to stand out on the town’s skyline. Dine at the restaurant within the structure. Local specialties include braaivleis meat barbecue and potjiekos spicy stew.

Modern history is entwined with the arrival of German settlers. Visit the Old German School and admire its Baroque design. Other intriguing sights include the Old German Cemetery and the German Evangelical Lutheran Church. Get around the region via the Bahnhof railway.

See the colonial-style prison building of Altes Gefängnis and the Alte Kaserne fortress that are both from the early 20th century.

Appreciate the pleasant desert climate, with little rainfall and mild to warm temperatures year-round. Notice the fog belt that runs through the Namib Desert, often providing the regional vegetation’s only moisture. This fog is partly responsible for the hundreds of shipwrecks that have occurred off the Skeleton Coast.

Get into the country via Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport and rent a car to get around. Drive west from the airport for 250 miles (400 kilometers) to get to the town in roughly 4 hours. Nearby sights of interest include Walvis Bay, Tsaobis Nature Park and the Omaruru Game Park.

Swakopmund has an intriguing history and fascinating nature parks.
