Enjoy the hot weather on the beaches and let your kids loose on the thrilling activities in this city, where fruit themes abound.

As one of Okinawa Island’s largest settlements, Nago has a rich history and many resorts. Appreciate scenic beaches, dramatic mountains on the horizon and plenty of green spaces that allow the city to breathe. Bring your children to enjoy the fun events and sights in this commune.

Note that the city has many outdoor activities that complement its year-round warm weather. August is the wettest month and December is the driest. Relax at the scenic Kariyushi Beach, which is bordered by a large row of trees. Ride a banana boat, swim in the pools and try other watersports.

Sunbathe on the neighboring Kise Beach. Just west on a small peninsula is Busena Beach. Use the underwater observatory and walk out on the pier.

Take the kids on the picturesque train running through Neo Park. This large zoo allows you to feed ostriches and flamingos. Stroke cute dogs in the petting zoo. A little west is Nago Pineapple Park with pineapple-themed kids’ rides. Ride the buggies shaped like pineapples to get around this park and learn the history of the spiky fruit. See how pineapple wine is made.

Visit the adjacent Okinawa Fruit Land, another adventure park with a theme of healthy eating. Learn about the origins of each fruit with the range of trees here.

Attend the Nago Cherry Blossom Festival in late January to see the city in full bloom. Take part in the Tour de Okinawa bicycle race in November.

The commune lies at the northern end of the island of Okinawa. Fly to Naha Airport in the island’s capital city and drive north for 50 miles (80 kilometers) to get here. You can also arrive at Iejima Airport on its eponymous island. Make sure to see neighboring landmarks, including Mount Yonaha and Mount Yae.

Nago is a fascinating place for kids to play on the beaches and learn about the joys of fruit.
