Marvel at the architecture of a town dubbed by German theologian and religious leader Martin Luther as the most beautiful in the country.

Known as the meeting point of Soviet and U.S. forces during World War II, Torgau is a pleasant town that lies on the River Elbe. Find out about this town’s historical significance by visiting its landmark war monument, looming castle and brewery museum.

Stroll through the charming old quarter and pick out your favorite Renaissance and Late-Gothic buildings. Admire the symmetry of the Town Hall in Market Square. The cobbled plaza contains floral displays and benches where you can sit and enjoy views of the colorful traditional buildings.

Wander southeast through the serene gardens of Rosengarten to reach the River Elbe. Walk along the riverside boulevard and stop at viewpoints to admire the scenery. Make use of the color-coded routes that guide sightseers through the town.

The town’s most prominent sight is the Hartenfels Palace that towers over the commune. Admire its bright red rooftops and white façade dotted with windows. Climb the grand staircase to see a sculpture of one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, who consecrated this castle in 1544.

The theologian’s wife Katharina von Bora arrived in Torgau to escape the plague. Visit the Katharina Luther House to check out the museum within her former residence. Stop by Marienkirche, where Martin Luther preached.

The kids will love a visit to Spielwaren Carl Loebner, which claims to be Germany’s oldest toyshop. Visit the Mohrenapotheke, said to be among Saxony’s oldest pharmacies.

Visit the town’s memorial and photo exhibition to learn about Elbe Day, when Soviet and American troops met here by the river in 1945 as defeat loomed for the Germans.

The town has a cold and wet climate, with drier months during spring and fall.

It is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northeast of LeipzigOpens in a new window, the largest city in Saxony. Arrive by train from the city in less than 1 hour. Dresden Airport is under 90 minutes’ drive away.

Serene Torgau is a portal to fascinating points in time.
