Southeast Belgium’s forest-covered hills hide historic villages and castles, providing a beautiful setting for horse riding, skiing, hiking and fishing.

The beautiful forest region of the Belgian Ardennes stretches from southeast Belgium across the borders to France, Luxembourg and Germany. In these mountainous regions, hike past wildlife habitats, wander through medieval castles and relax in historic villages.

Start at the edge of the Ardennes on the Meuse River in Liège, Emperor Charlemagne’s presumed birthplace. Visit the former Prince-Bishops’ Palace, now a courthouse. Sample Wallonian cheeses and apple butter at the large Sunday market.

Head into the mountainous region along the route to Spa and stop off at Franchimont Castle to learn about medieval and Renaissance techniques of defending a fortress under siege. Treat yourself to a soak in the hot mineral springs at the picturesque village of Spa, before dressing up for a night of gambling in possibly the world’s oldest casino, opened in 1763.

Gather insight into Ardennes’ culture and traditions at the Cwarmê Malmedy, a 4-day spring festival with colorful masks and costumes. A short drive from Malmedy is the Reinhardstein Castle, overlooking the Warche valley and built in the 14th century. It houses a museum of historic furniture, religious artifacts, armor and weapons.

Around Huy find a cluster of historic castles. Catch the cable car to the Citadel of HuyOpens in a new window, which was used by the Nazis as an internment camp for political prisoners during World War II. Visit the Castle of Moha, thought to be Belgium’s oldest fortress. Though it is not always open due to archaeology works, it’s worth seeing the impressive stonework defenses rising high in the air.

Follow the hiking and cycle trails accessed from Spa and Stavelot. Enjoy the stunning scenery along the rivers with a kayaking trip on the Amblève River in Stavelot or the River Lesse. When you return from your adventure to one of the towns of the Belgian Ardennes, enjoy the wonderful Wallonian food. Sample Trappist beers, which you can experience firsthand in the Abbey of Orval, and savor wild game dishes and fruit tarts.

Where to stay in Belgian Ardennes

Extraordinary desserts and beer. Pictured: salty caramel waffles, #delicious! P.S. The proximity to the Meuse is intoxicating in terms of positive energy and many cubic meters of turquoise.
