Whale Museum

Videos, photos and large collection of whale and turtle skeletons provide a fascinating insight into the region’s extraordinary aquatic life.

The Whale Museum is one of the most fun and enlightening attractions in La Paz. Identifiable by the giant whale replica that appears to be crashing through a redbrick wall, the iconic site contains a range of audiovisual displays and whale skeletons. Learn about these enormous creatures of the deep in this modern museum.

Make your way through the six exhibition spaces for a deeper understanding of whales. As you study the various models and skeletons, sounds of whale communications play on the speakers. Marvel at the sheer size of the whale bones and study old photos of caught fish.

Read the informative plaques about the gray whales that spend time in the region. It’ll give you ideas for snorkeling and scuba diving trips to nearby Isla Espiritu Santo. Join a guided tour and chat with the docent for further details.

Watch the films and find out about the museum’s conservation efforts for whales. You’ll also find a segment on the seven different species of turtles that are found in Mexico. See the exhibits on sharks, porpoises and other aquatic creatures living in local waters.

Purchase stuffed toy whales and all types of marine-related souvenirs in the gift shop. Relax with a hot drink or a snack in the café. After your tour of the museum, wander down the Malecón and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea. Get an ice cream and inspect the 16 sculptures adorning the boardwalk.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until early evening. Buy a ticket to enter and get a discount for children.

Find the Whale Museum on the coastal boardwalk of the Malecón in the heart of La Paz. The structure is a 5-minute walk northwest of the Jardin Velasco. See other nearby sights such as the Dove of Peace Monument, the Malecón Kiosk and the Espectacular de la Paz.
